List of Common Snakes Found in North Carolina
According to the expert, it is recommended to stay away from the snake and give it enough room to escape. However, in case you need to determine what type of snake you are dealing with, we will discuss some of them in this article. Based on the recent report, there are about 38 snake’s species in NC and around 6 of them will be venomous.
Gray Rat Snake
The rat snake love to feed on lizards, rats, and mice. We will often encounter them on buildings and garages especially the juvenile snakes. Since they have a slight resemblance to the copperhead, they are often believed to be a venomous snake. This is quite a shame since the rat snake offers multitude of benefits such as reducing the population of the rodents. This snake may vary in terms of pattern and coloration contingent upon their age. The young snake will have light gray blotches but as they grow old the light grey will turn dark. It has an average length of around 105-185cm.
Brown Water Snake
The brown water snake is a large non-venomous snake that can grow at 32-64 inches. They have a bulging jaw and a flat head; therefore, some people will think that they are venomous. The eyes that are protruding above their head makes them look like a frog. This snake prefers to live close to bodies of water. They are shy and will often be seen basking on the limbs of the trees that overhangs on water. When the snake is disturbed, it will immediately drop on the water.
Corn Snake
The corn snake will differ in color, it may range from brown to orange shade. It will also have a reddish blotch that highlights a black border. However, there are instances that their checkered pattern will be white and yellow. They also share the same feature with copperhead that will prompt others to kill them. However, corn snakes are harmless. They are non-venomous, and they are not aggressive. They feed on lizards, rodents, frogs, and birds.
Eastern Coachwhip
This snake has a long and narrow body that grows at an average of 48-94 inches. They are known for moving quickly. Their usual habitat is found in wiregrass, oaks, pines, sandy flatwoods, and sandhills. Once this snake noticed the movement of other animal, it will quickly retreat to the vegetation or the nearest hiding ground. However, it will still bite if you pick it up.
You perhaps noticed how most of the snakes in North Carolina are non-venomous. They are essential in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. Their presence is an indication of a healthy environment.
